1st Customer Review : Accurate, well made and a true time saver
Unlike some of the other reviewers here, this is my first ever laser distance measuring device. I have several of the old ultrasonic units, but never trusted them (rightfully so).
So, the GLM-50 is my first time using this technology, and it immediately was put to work helping with a frame for a wall in my garage. Since I did not yet know whether its measurements were reliable, everything I did was with the GLM-50 and my good old tape measure.
Settings on the unit are pretty simple - power on or off, measure and mode (which lets you pick between measuring from the front, middle or back of the unit, depending on how you are using it).
I switched mine to metric since I'm more used to that and find that it is easier to make reliable measurements in it. For my first test, I measured between two posts coming down from the ceiling. My tape measure came to 165cm, and the GLM-50 measured exactly the same thing. I tried to trick it and made the measurement 10...

2nd Customer Review : GLM50 vs. GLM80...vs GLRXXX?
I generally love Bosch products, and this one is not at all bad. However, after using the GLM80 for a while, I can't help but feel that this one lacks too many features. I also don't understand how it fits into their product line - if it does so legitimately or if it is an afterthought just to make a few extra bucks. Let me explain:
I am by no means an expert on Bosch's products or naming conventions, but in my research before I got the GLM80 (which I believe was the ONLY GLM at the time), I came to the conclusion that the GLR series is the plain, normal laser distance measurer line of products that did straight lines at a greater distance depending on the model number (not to mention add or subtract or multiply those numbers to figure out area, volume, right triangle leg lengths, etc.) while the GLM was new and added a whole new set of features through (smart phone style) weights that allowed it to figure out angles (and therefore do indirect measurements and non-right...
3rd Customer Review : Bosch outdid dewalt and others with this unit
The 165 feet is under typical conditions. At night you can measure longer distances off reflective objects like street signs stop signs, etc.
A nice feature is the tripod socket underneath. A mini-con is they used AAA batts instead of AA which are so much more common.
This and the high end are the only 2 models from bosch with a backlight. You don't think about that until you are in a dark room in new construction and trying to make measurements, or making measurements at night and close to dusk on a long day, or in the attic. The backlight is LED based so it should last forever.
I had tried a fluke and dewalt unit - but I'm more impressed with the resolution and features of the Bosch especially the backlight.
It comes with a protective case and lanyard. You can even put the lanyard out the bottom of the case and wrap it around your belt so it doesnt grow legs.
